Titanic Trivia

5 Things You Didn’t Know About James Cameron’s ‘Titanic’

Icy Depths: In the scene in which Rose goes looking through the corridors of the sinking ship for Jack, the water was so frigid that when Rose gasps upon diving into the water, it was the actress’s genuine reaction to the ocean water. Kate Winslet was one of the few actors who didn’t want to wear a wetsuit while filming these scenes, and after this, she came down with pneumonia.

Jack’s Understudy: James Cameron pushed for Leonardo DiCaprio to take the pivotal role, but the film’s producers wanted another leading man—Matthew McConaughey.

My Heart Will Go On: No Celine Dion? Cameron want Irish singer Enya to compose the score for Titanic. She turned him down.

Flash Dance: Kate and Leo had never met each other before the set of Titanic. To break the ice, Winslet did something drastic in an attempt to ease the tension for her nude scene—she flashed him.

Artistic Direction: Jack’s character is an artist who totes a sketchbook filled with inspired drawings and passionately sketched nudes. But Leo wasn’t the mastermind behind the iconic figures; it was Cameron himself who drew everything in the book—including the infamous portrait of Rose wearing nothing but a bejeweled necklace.

What breed is right for your family?

The 10 Most High-Maintenance Dogs

The Australian Shepherd
never runs out of energy! You’ll wear out before he does unless you are equally active — and creative enough to keep him occupied.
A Cavalier King Charles Spaniel loves to be in a lap and will claim yours in a flash. The ideal home is one with a stay-at-home parent or work-at-home spouse, or with a retired couple.
The Border Collie has a desire to work that borders on the obsessive. He will herd anything that comes his way. If he is underemployed at home, he is likely to develop compulsive behaviors such as chasing light and shadows, twirling in circles, and bouncing up and down.
A Brussels Griffon is stuck to you like Velcro. When he feels abandoned or lacking in attention, he gets destructive. Take him with you when you can and train him early on to accept necessary separation with equanimity — or face the consequences.
The Cocker Spaniel dislikes being left alone. If they’re not well socialized — and even some who are — they can develop severe separation anxiety that takes the form of barking, whining and destructive behavior.
The German Shorthaired Pointer is one of the most demanding of their owner’s energy and attention. Energetic, strong and challenging, he requires daily sessions of heart-pumping exercise and plenty of training.
A Jack Russell Terrier is hardwired to be active and needs a full-time activity director to keep him busy and constructive to prevent being destructive.
A Poodle does shed, despite what you might hear and they are not hypoallergenic. That beautiful curly coat requires visits to a professional groomer every six to eight weeks. During adolescence, the maturing coat must be brushed daily to prevent mats.
A Labrador Retriever needs interaction and structured activity every day if you don’t want to see destruction. Remember Marley & Me?
The Yorkshire Terrier has a high-maintenance coat, even if clipped short. A Yorkie with a long coat requires daily brushing and weekly baths.

Allergy troubles?

Itchy, sneezy, weezy? Check out these allergy hotspots around the house.

Greenery: Up to 70 percent of potted plants give off allergy-triggering mold spores!

Washing Machine:University of Arizona researchers say washing machines can also harbor millions of these allergy triggers, due to poor drainage and damp crevices, seals and gaskets.

Scented Candles: Research from the Environmental Protection Agency suggests those flickering flames emit chemicals that can nudge indoor pollutant levels up to levels considered illegal outdoors. Plus, the oils that give scented candles their distinctive smells can irritate and inflame the nasal cavities, triggering a runny nose and watery eyes even if you’re not normally allergy-prone.

Coat Closet: According to UCLA researchers, at least 50 percent of rarely-washed outerwear is coated with enough allergens to trigger flare-ups.

Windows & Doors: According to the EPA, allergens quickly build up inside tightly-sealed homes, reaching levels more than triple what you inhale outdoors. To clear them out fast -- without making your heating costs skyrocket -- open a few windows for 15 minutes daily to let a fresh breeze blow through.

Bathmat: That much-used mat harbors at least 10 times more dust mites and mold than the floor it’s laying on.
